Inside the trick.
25-27 February 2027 Naples. Provisional dates.
Generated. GPT image.
The production journal is the document where every film says how it was made. Tools, stages, choices. Every submission to WAIFF Napoli includes one.
Why we ask
Every film has a room nobody goes into.
- The version thrown out at the last minute.
- The prompt rewritten deep into the night.
- The scene that worked, and that you cut.
That room is the craft. With artificial intelligence it matters more than usual, because that's where you can see who made the decisions.
The journal opens the door. The film stays what it is, and the audience knows how you got there.
What goes in it
Until the WAIFF Napoli rules are published, we're following the four items in the WAIFF 2027 rules. One sentence per stage is enough, and you don't need your prompts word for word or your rejects.
-
The tools.
The main AI tools you used.
-
The stages.
The stages of production where you used them.
-
Your hand.
What you decided, what you threw out, what you corrected.
-
Other people's material.
Where relevant, any third-party material you used and why you were entitled to use it.
What it isn't
The journal isn't a purity test.
The festival certifies nothing, and no machine scans your film to decide whether it's real. The selection committee and the jury read it to understand how the film came about.
The test on this site
Before asking anyone else, we asked it of the images on this site, the opening image and a test frame, the horse in the theatre. Trick included, rejects included.

Starting point
It starts with a pencil drawing, also generated, lined up with the finished frame. The horse in the stalls, turned towards us. We're the ones on stage.
Prompt
The prompt, word for word (in Italian)
Pellicola 35 mm, grana organica, colori naturali. Cinema d'autore italiano.
The horse's prompts are in Italian, as we wrote them, and are shown as given to the tool. The crowd's prompts are in English.
At the end of every prompt the command added the words “no text, no logos” and the image format.
Takes
The first render polished the horse, put gold everywhere and switched on eight bulbs nobody asked for. We asked for less pretty, and got a horror film. The third had the right light, but swirls drawn on the coat. One last correction, and the coat was a coat again.
Author
A horse in the stalls, and us on stage. We took out the gold, the extra bulbs, the glittering dust. What's left is a mare, a rope halter and a single bulb. Everything is ordinary, and that's what makes it strange.
Other people's material
GPT image, someone else's model, trained on material we can't see. The horse and the theatre are generated, and no real theatre was asked for by name.

1 Storyboard the horse in the stalls, turned towards us. we're the ones on stage. The prompt, word for word (in Italian) , Storyboard
The prompt, word for word , Storyboard
Nessuna scritta, nessun numero.
At the end of every prompt the command added the words “no text, no logos” and the image format.

3 Second render I asked for less pretty and it made a horror film. cut. The prompt, word for word (in Italian) , Second render
The prompt, word for word , Second render

4 Third render the light is right. but it drew swirls on the coat. cut. The prompt, word for word (in Italian) , Third render
The prompt, word for word , Third render

5 The frame a mare, a rope halter, a single bulb. that'll do. chosen The prompt, word for word (in Italian) , The frame
The prompt, word for word , The frame
Nient'altro cambia.

The opening image of this site has its own journal, fourteen steps from the grey guide to the poles on the shoulders. Its layers sit in the lens on the home page, on the same image.
Open the lens on the home pageThe scenes with the screen move very slightly, the way a film camera would. First we computed a depth map with a model, Depth Anything V2 Small. Then we flattened the screen and the black strip in that map, so whatever is printed on them stays still. If the faces in a scene start to tear, the movement is switched off for that scene.

How to fill it in
No formatting needed.
In step 4 of the form you answer questions, the form lays out your answers and you download them as a PDF.
If you already have your own journal, upload it as it is, in PDF or Word, up to 5 MB.
How to write a good one
A good journal is short and precise. It says what really happened, even when it went badly.
Says little I used AI for the images.
Says it all I generated the backgrounds and threw out every version where the light changed from one shot to the next.
Says little The film was edited with the help of AI.
Says it all The tool suggested a first cut. I kept the order of the scenes and redid the cuts by hand.
